Hannah Cave’s room features its own lounge, adorned with Cole & Sons’ Orange Blossom wallpaper, which adds an element of drama that beautifully contrasts with the dark antique elm floorboards and the elegant George I and II furniture. The room boasts a luxurious en-suite shower room, along with a stunning staircase that leads to a mezzanine, where a king-size bed awaits, nestled within the breathtaking roof space. You may even catch a glimpse of Hannah’s captivating portrait, enticingly depicting her as she removes her dress.
‘Hannah Cave, a sultry redhead with a penchant for hosting lively parties, was well-known for her hospitality. In 1850, she famously accommodated the animals from Batty’s menagerie, including horses and even elephants. One evening, after a show, the Wheatsheaf’s charlady suffered a near-fatal incident when she reached into a cage to feed a leopard, nearly having her arm torn off in the process. Chaos erupted, and she was quickly taken to the local doctor and infirmary for treatment.’
